TUPAMAROS
- "Beyond the bias'' MCD
 |
This
is it! Like back in the old days. Emo sounding band covering political
issues. A few days ago I was thinking about all this new "emo" sounding
bands coming out these days. Music with senseless words. I hate it.
These kinds of bands used to have something useful to say, but today
neither the music, neither the message is not distinguishing from
all the mainstream industry. It makes me sick. And I see people falling
so much into this ''emo'' thing... ridiculous. Well, Tupamaros are
not really sounding like this indie emo rock sounding bands I was
talking about but more energetic. Sometimes they remind me on Quetzal
or on easier sounding Boy sets fire songs (but not the most easier
one!). Mid tempo music with beautiful singing and spoken words that
sometimes change into screaming. Music that calms you down and make
you dance at the same time. But the main reason why I like this band
are their lyrics in which they mainly raise the idea of self-liberation!

PEACE
OF MIND/ UPSET - split 7"
 |
This
is really amazing material! I hope some day more bands will start
working this way like Peace of mind and Upset did in this case, because
I must say they really endeavoured. Their lyrics are written in 5
different languages and beside that they enclosed also 20 pages long
booklet in which members of Peace of mind and some other people contributed
some of their thoughts. The booklet laid topics like communication
as a weapon, our so called freedom, prison/death penalty....everything
very educational and interesting to read. Ok. Let's skip to the bands
now. First Peace of mind. They play some kind of convivial emo punk
hardcore with male and female vocals. I wish I would heard some more
songs because I like it. Their lyrics speak about friends and their
separated ways, about our terms to homeless people and for the song
called "Untitled" we could find an explanation in the text inside
the booklet titled "Live free or die". Very widened lyrics! And on
the other side Upset which musically I like more. They have a perfect
name for the kind of music they play. Dark, slow, sad with desperate
crunching vocal. Typical german style actually, but I like it. I hope
they will release some new shit soon. I think their song called "Golden
dragonheart ripped out with a knife called schwert'' talks about the
fact that we have to think with our own mind and not imitating other
people like sheep. They said "I do not need a scene to know who I
am". But I'm not totally sure about other song called "Leaving Las
Vegas'' which could have more the one meaning but it indubitably criticise
out society. Support these two bands!!!

KRAKATOA
- "Channel static blackout'' CD
 |
Very
well elaborated music which works very convincing to me. I just love
this. I liked their 7" a few years ago and I like this. I was astonished
when my eyes caught an ad for the new upcoming CD. Krakatoa came back
from the dead, created some now shit and than again disappeared. I
was immediately feel a need to get this drug. Well, in the meantime
Krakatoa went into more heavy metal sounding direction which is not
bad at all. They sound like some mix between Iron Maiden and Harvest.
They have such a beautiful guitars melodies, perfect harmonic parts,
brilliant heavy metal riffs and this awesome vocal done by ex-singer
of Harvest. Very good combination with even better outcome. I'm sure
everyone who liked Harvest or even Iron Maiden will dig this. To bad
that this is only studio band because I would fuckin love to see this
band playing live. Emotional lyrics. SECOND NATURE RECORDINGS, PO

DESIDERATA
- ''Everyone could...'' MCD
 |
Desiderata
are from Luxembourg but if I wouldn't notice their address I would
think they are from Germany or Austria. Their music really reminds
me on German kind of emo hardcore. You know, a little touch of metal,
rough screaming vocal, nimble unexpected riffs, harmonic parts, etc...When
I listen to this, bands like Akira and Aclys first come to my mind.
There are three songs in english language and three in their native
language. The english three talk about finding yourself, being yourself
and about the end of our world. Good solid release.

FEAR
MY THOUGHTS - ''Sapere aude'' MCD
 |
I'm
a little confused how to label Fear my thoughts. At some points it
sounds like some emo-metal with interesting guitar melodies and rhythms
and than it is all lost in I could say old school tunes. They have
quite good structured songs. There is lot's of different pieces which
nice pour over from mid tempo to fast parts. I think this is a good
example how today modern hardcore sounds like. This music quite pleased
me but there are vocals which I don't like. It's too corrupted. I
understanding that the production is not that good but I think they
should try with a litter bit cleaner voice. Otherwise this is good.
Lyrics contains old school topics.

CANVAS
- ''Lost in rock'' CD
 |
Canvas
certainly want to create something of their own, something new and
I must say they are very successful in doing what they are doing.
If I look back in the past I remember their first full length which
was awesome and than also their split CD with Hard to Swallow which
was so brutal and hellish that I couldn't even listen it. It seems
that with each album they want to do something totally different
and with this album they managed to do a huge step out. This is
so chaotic!!! It's not that metal as it used to be because they
used also some rock elements but otherwise this is total mess. Vocal
is from time to time hysterical screamy but mainly it sounds like
if the singer doesn't have a will to sing anymore. He's using some
strange and very uncool technics of singing. Their songs are pretty
long and it's like there are more songs in each song. Rhythms are
very changeable. There is also lots of other elements in their music
like piano, violin, flute, synthesiser, lots of samplers and even
some rave. I must say that this is fuckin psychedelic art. It can
be really dark and scary sometimes and their riffs are so strange
that.....it's like some illusion from your worst nightmare. I don't
know why, but when I'm listening this I'm thinking like this is
music for hippies. Don't ask why!!! The lyrics are pretty reflecting
with their music - they are very messy, emotional and written in
a dark way.

FALL
SILENT - ''Life: Beautiful, but heartless.'' 7''
 |
These
three new songs + one cover song are still in the same style like
songs on the ''Super structure''. Still remains all this unusual riffs
and all these crazy metal tricks. Songs are a little bit faster so
all this energy came even more to the expression. Their lyrics also
didn't lose their previous form - they are pretty direct so it's not
difficult to understand the meaning. This is good but I prefer their
previous stuff!

FALL
SILENT - ''Super structure'' CD
 |
This
is great! I didn't think that this music will astonished me so much.
Although their live show didn't convinced me, I picked up this CD
anyway. And I'm glad I did that. This is pure energy of chaos and
distortion. The rhythm is changing all the time and everything is
perfectly composed together. There is also lot's of double bass, mosh
parts, fast and slow parts....in short all possible elements. We can
find even some hip hop and heavy metal tricks. And if we add to all
this also screaming vocal we got some really crazy shit. That's Fall
Silent. Their lyrics are about every days problems and boringness
of the human beings. I'm very happy that this guys released this album
also on Revolutionary Power Tools and not only on Genet rec., because
in this case I would probably never met this masterpiece.

LARIAT
- ''Means of production.'' CD
 |
In
my hands I'm holding booklet of this great band called Lariat. I
was totally astonished when I read it. This is so real!! In their
lyrics they cover mainly political topics and each song has also
an explanation. But let's go from the start. Lariat are from America
and I think this is their first full length. Their music is pretty
cool but it gets bored with time. They play some kind of mixture
between Trial, His hero is gone and Catharsis. The sound has a very
full sound and the music is moving from mid tempo to fast parts.
There is also lot's of double bass and a little metal influences.
Their vocal is pretty rough and I don't like it that much. But let's
talk about the lyrics now, because they are fuckin amazing. They
start with introduction where they told us that we have to live
our lives like there is no tomorrow and that we must start living
like we always wanted to. Their first song is called ''Monsanto''.
This song speaks about genetic experiments and that we will all
soon become victims of this corporations. The second song is ''Thick
as thieves''. When I read this song I was totally shocked. This
song talk about an immigrant who was brutally killed by the police
officers on his doorstep for nothing. Of course nobody of the cops
was guilty. The third song is about the votes. This song could be
the reason why I didn't go voting this year. Next song is for all
the revolutionary kids. The fifth song is talking about out capitalistic
bastards who just exploiting workers. In the sixth song they tell
us that we have to support companies that share our beliefs. The
seventh song speaks about the relation between America and the oil
countries. They say ''As long as our boys don't die. We trade blood
for oil''. And the last song is about the teenagers which are kind
of forced to go to the army by the government. I think Lariat really
did a great job here. This is a real hardcore!

MAR/
FALL TIME. - split 7''
| MUSIC: |
    |
LYRICS: |
    |
| MUSIC: |
   |
LYRICS: |
    |
 |
We
find on this split two Austrian bands which offer us metallic hardcore.
I met Mar already before and they are also the main reason why I picked
up this 7''. Their previous 7'' was great. This two songs which we
can find here are in the same vein. Maybe just a little more technical.
Music is still driving, emotional, dark, with some totally metal parts
from time to time. Also beautiful and awesome guitar melodies. I could
say they have their own style. Their unique screaming vocal can be
at the beginning a little disturbing, but when you got used to it,
it fits just great. I think their lyrics speaking about individuality
and about lose of the special person. I really like their style. Ups...I
almost forgot about the Fall time. on the other side. They play little
bit heavy music like their fellows. Heavy and painful metallic hardcore
which reminds me on...hmm....maybe Knut. I don't know. Let's say they
have some Hydra Head influences. Their music is at any rate not as
convicting as Mar but they are also not that bad. One pessimistic
lyric and another tell as that we mustn't hide our emotions inside.
Hmm...maybe I totally missed the point.
