Forestry in Slovenia and Slovenia forestry service

Slovenia is a small central European state. It is covered with 53% of forests. It is one of the most wooded countries in Europe. Forestry  in Slovenia has a tradition for almost 300 years. This tradition begun with forest-orders in 17.th century

Forest owners in Slovenia are  state,  private persons, enterprises, local communities, church and forest cooperatives.

Forestry is a part of ministry  for agriculture,  forestry and food in Slovenian government. There is also a research institute for forestry in Ljubljana. The faculty for forestry in Ljubljana cares about education of new foresters.

The latest law of forest was approved in Slovenian parliament on  June the 25, 1993. It made a basis for organization of forestry civil service. Civil service started to work on May the 1, 1994. It  is organized in Slovenia Forestry Service (SFS).

Work on felling, wood skidding, wood transport is carrying out by forestry  enterprises or forest owners. Forest enterprises work mainly in state forests.

Realization  of law of forests is controlled by forestry  inspection that is also a part of ministry for agriculture,  forestry and food. Penalties for violation of law for forestry are financial. Most common violations of law for forests are:

  • felling without an administrative decree
  • felling against rules described in decree.
  • Slovenia forestry service

SFS  is  centrally  organized with the main  seat in  Ljubljana.  Further  there  are 14 region units of SFS  in Slovenia. Region units  are divided in local units. In region unit Maribor of  SFS there are 8 local units. SFS works in all forests regardless on their ownership.

    Main tasks of SFS are:

  • to  provide public interest above the use  and management  of forests,
  • to  balance the public interest with the interest  of forest owner  in the limits according with present situation of forest ecosystem,
  • to advise the forest owners,
  • to accompany the situation and development of forests,
  • to provide the protection for forests,
  • to guide the construction of forest roads and its maintenance,
  • to provide the young forest tree and bush plants,
  • to inspect the work that was accomplished by forest owner if the work is partially financed from the budget.
  • On the basis of these main tasks SFS has needed databases and in the same time provides their permanent renewal. SFS also makes forest-managing plans, detailed forest-developing plans, hunting plans for wild animals, etc.

One  of  SFS tasks is also popularization of forests and forestry in  public.  For this reason  SFS maintains  so called forest school ways on which  the foresters employed in SFS provide leadership for guests. Usually the guests on these ways are children from elementary schools.

SFS is also preparing and holding lectures about forest ecology, problems in forest, etc.

Main goals of SFS are to manage with forests in the way balanced with  nature. SFS is trying  to strengthen the forest health  condition and  to strengthen the ability of forest to provide all, in particularly social  (for example recreational, touristical, estetical)  and  protection (for example against erosion), functions of forest. SFS is also trying to balance the relationship between wild animals and forests.

SFS  is  trying  to reach all these goals with measure's as much kind  to nature as possible.
